What is SAP BTP?
SAP BTP is a portfolio of platform services that sits alongside SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud. It provides runtime environments, integration tooling, AI services, analytics, and low-code development tools for everything that cannot and should not live in the clean core.
BTP is organized into a Global Account with multiple Subaccounts, one per environment (development, test, production). This structure must be designed early in the project. Restructuring BTP accounts post-go-live is complex and disruptive.
BTP Service Portfolio
BTP is not a single tool. Each service category has a distinct technical purpose:

How BTP Connects to the Clean Core
BTP extensions communicate with S/4HANA exclusively via SAP’s published APIs, REST services from the SAP API Business Hub, OData v4 services, and events published via SAP Event Mesh. This API boundary is the architectural enforcement mechanism of the clean core: no BTP extension ever directly accesses S/4HANA’s database or internal function modules. This isolation is what ensures BTP extensions remain compatible across SAP’s twice-yearly update cycle.
BTP is not just an add-on. It is the architectural layer where your competitive advantage in SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud is built.
SAP BTP completes the extensibility model for SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud. In-App tools and Embedded ABAP handle what belongs inside the system. BTP handles everything that needs to live outside: integrations to third-party systems, custom applications with complex UX requirements, AI-driven process automation, and enterprise analytics. Organizations that design their BTP architecture carefully with proper subaccount structure, consumption modeling, and API governance — build a scalable, maintainable extension portfolio that grows cleanly alongside SAP’s continuous innovation releases.
